School Board Member
John Binder is a retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and currently serves as the Deputy Commissioner of Aviation for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) and the Executive Director for the Alaska International Airport System, managing the state’s 249 rural and international airports. In addition, he oversees the State’s Division of Measurement Standards and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement.
John is married to Kia Binder and they have four children. Their oldest son Ryan graduated from Grace Christian School in 2016 and their other children, Alex, Tessa and Tyler, are current students in senior and junior high at GCS. Kia is a labor and delivery nurse at Providence Medical Center and was an assistant GCS Kindergarten teacher in 2013-14. The Binders will celebrate 20 years of marriage in February 2017.
John had a distinguished active duty career, retiring after 21 years of service and thousands of flight hours in operational and trainer aircraft. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Astronautical Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy, a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Sciences from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and a Master of Science degree in Space Systems from the Air Force Institute of Technology. He has served as a deacon and church home group leader with years of service in worship team, college, youth and children’s ministries.
